GitHub Faces Performance Hurdles in August 2025
GitHub encountered three critical service disruptions in August 2025, exposing vulnerabilities in its infrastructure. The incidents triggered immediate upgrades to monitoring systems and safeguards.
On August 5, a 32-minute outage affected 4% of web traffic during a botched database migration. Engineers later discovered the ORM system still referenced a supposedly deprecated column, causing cascading failures in pull requests and notifications. A secondary glitch impacted 0.1% of pull request traffic before full resolution.
The platform suffered a more severe outage on August 12 when search functionality degraded for over three hours. Users reported inaccurate results and loading failures, though GitHub's engineering team has yet to disclose root causes for this incident.
